Yemen Emergency Electricity Supply Project Workshop (Phase II)
UNOPS held a workshop on the Yemen Emergency Electricity Supply Project (Phase II)
The workshop focused on the issue of “battery recycling,” a pressing environmental and health issue resulting from the accumulation of large quantities of damaged batteries and the direct threat they pose to humans and the environment.
It is worth noting that the recycling process for these batteries will be conducted in accordance with the findings of this workshop. Batteries contain raw materials such as lead, acid, and plastic. These materials will significantly contribute to establishing the factory and reducing risks. They also represent a promising economic opportunity for creating small income-generating projects, especially for unemployed youth of both genders, given the growing demand for recycling solutions in the local market.
During the workshop, Engineer Abdullah Badiah, representative of the Technical Education and Vocational Training Office in Aden, noted that Aden was a pioneer in the field of industry and had the first battery factory in the Arabian Peninsula, in the Sheikh Ishaq area of Al-Mualla, which ceased operations after unification. We all hope to rehabilitate and revive this vital plant.
During the workshop, Engineer Mohammed Al-Husseini, Deputy Project Manager, emphasized that the success of this workshop is the result of the combined efforts of development partners and supporting entities. It is not a temporary event, but rather a strategic step toward creating a sustainable environment that transforms challenges into opportunities and recycles waste into economic projects that serve both people and the environment.
The participants in the project workshop agreed that these joint efforts will yield real solutions that contribute to building a brighter and more stable future for young men and women.
The event was held in the Panorama Hall from September 2025.
